Lower Your Eyes

Feast of the Ascension

Jesus ascended to heaven. He is covered by the cloud. He is no longer be seen. He is no longer be touched. He is physically gone.

In the Gospel story, as Jesus disappeared from their sight, the disciples continued to gaze upwards into the sky. The two men wearing white clothes stood beside them saying: “Men of Galilee, what are you doing looking at the sky? This same Jesus who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

The disciples have a new lesson to learn: they will not now find Jesus in the sky, in “heaven”. The Jesus they knew before the crucifixion has left them for good. They have to go back to Jerusalem. There, through the outpouring of the Spirit of the Father and Jesus on them, they will begin to understand and grow in understanding. If they want to find Jesus, they will find him in the Christian community, in those they mix with every day of their lives.

Every time they receive the love of a brother, it is the presence of Jesus. Every time they share their love with a brother or sister, they are making Jesus present to that person. They – and we – are to be Jesus in this world. We are to be the visible presence of Jesus. It is really a great challenge and a rather scary responsibility.

When people see me, do they see Jesus? When people see me, do they want to know Jesus? When people see me, do they want to join our community, share our life, and take the Gospel as the foundation of their life? That is the meaning of the Ascension.

How Weak Are You?

Reading: John 16:12-15

How strong are you to follow Jesus?

If I say that I am strong enough, I could mean that I have the power and strength to do anything in my own way. I know what to do and I know where to go.

When Jesus said that "the Spirit of Truth comes and will guide you into the whole truth", it actually means that I don't have any strength at all. I am just weak and I can't do anything. I don't know anything. I need His Spirit to guide me.

The question then is not a matter of how strong we are to follow Him. It is rather the contrary: how weak we are to follow Him. In humility, we need to recognize our own vulnerability. There is a need for us to surrender. We need to be like a little child and let our Father be our strength. We depend on God and God alone. He is much stronger!

How weak are you to follow Jesus?
